Patna: This year, Durga Puja celebrations in Bihar are taking place on a large scale, with around 16,000 idols of Goddess Durga installed across the state. To manage the huge crowds and ensure safety, Bihar Police has made elaborate security arrangements. More than 24,000 trainee constables, home guards, and 37 DSP-rank officers have been deployed to maintain order. Districts have been asked to keep strict watch on borders and carry out 24-hour patrolling throughout the festival.
In all, 54 companies of additional forces have been sent to districts to strengthen security. These include 31 companies of the Bihar Special Armed Police, 12 companies of the Anti-Riot Squad, and 11 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces. In Patna, which is expected to see the biggest gatherings, eight companies of forces, 2,100 trainee constables and home guards, and 10 DSP-rank officers have been assigned. Police in plain clothes will also be present to monitor crowds, and idol immersion processions will take place under police escort.
Strict guidelines have been issued to puja organisers. All procession licences have been issued and videography has been made compulsory on sensitive routes. DJs have been completely banned, and loudspeakers must follow the allowed volume limit and be turned off after 10 pm. Puja committees have been told not to display pictures, slogans, or videos that could hurt religious feelings. CCTV cameras and fire safety systems must be installed in pandals. To ensure safe movement of devotees, police and magistrates have been stationed along major traffic routes, with special lighting arrangements made for nights.
Social media will also be closely watched during Durga Puja. Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and Instagram will be monitored 24 hours a day by the Police Headquarters’ Social Media Center and district-level monitoring teams. Strict action will be taken against people spreading rumours or sharing content that may create tension. Antisocial elements have also been asked to sign bonds to prevent any disturbance during the celebrations.
With these measures in place, the government and police hope to make this year’s Durga Puja a peaceful and joyous occasion for everyone in Bihar.
