Bhojpur: Voting for the second day of the Bihar assembly elections was marred by violence in Bhojpur on Friday morning, when villagers clashed with police and hurled stones at security vehicles, leaving several damaged and two officials injured.
The incident unfolded in Dullamchak village under the Chauri police station area, where residents had detained and begun beating two suspected armed men from Gulzarpur. According to local reports, tensions escalated when police arrived to rescue the suspects from the crowd.
The intervention sparked an argument, and in the chaos both men escaped. Furious villagers accused the police of helping the suspects flee and responded by attacking the security team with bricks and stones.
A sub-inspector and a village watchman were injured in the assault, while the mob smashed windows of several private vehicles and at least six police vehicles.
Senior police officers, including SDPO K.K. Singh, reached the village soon after and brought the situation under control. Officials said a country-made pistol was recovered from the belongings of the absconding suspects.
Villagers claimed the confrontation stemmed from police “misbehaviour”, while officers insisted they were attempting to prevent mob justice. The area had already been tense following an alleged election-related dispute the previous day.
An investigation into the clash and the suspects’ escape is underway, police said.
