Patna : Even before the Election Commission announces the dates, Bihar’s skies are set to get crowded, with political parties reserving a record number of helicopters for the upcoming assembly campaign.
According to officials at Patna airport, 20 choppers will operate out of the state hangar this election season, roughly three times more than in 2020. NDA partners have already secured the bulk, with the BJP set to use 12 to 13 helicopters, while JD (U) has booked two. Other NDA allies such as Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha are also expected to share services.
The Mahagathbandhan has booked five helicopters for RJD, Congress and their partners, while the Jan Suraaj Party is unlikely to take to the skies.
Helicopters range from four to six seaters, with both single and twin-engine options. Costs have risen sharply compared with the last polls: single-engine choppers now cost Rs 1-2 lakh per hour and twin-engine machines Rs 3-4 lakh. Parties must pay a minimum three-hour charge on booking, taking the daily bill to around Rs 10.62 lakh including GST.
“Demand is unprecedented,” said Devendra Kumar, manager of Global Flight Services at Patna airport. “The higher fleet will make the campaign faster and more effective.”
