Patna: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a prime accused in the Amritsar temple grenade attack, detaining Sharanjit Kumar, also known as Sunny, from a hotel in Gayaji.
Kumar, a resident of Bhaini Bangar Kadian in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, was picked up on Friday following a tip-off, officials confirmed. Local police in Sherghati assisted in the operation.
According to the NIA, Kumar played a key role in supplying grenades to two bike-borne assailants, Gursidak Singh and Vishal Gill, who carried out the March 15 attack on the temple. Investigators say Kumar received a consignment of four grenades in early March, two of which were passed on to the attackers just days before the strike.
The agency claims the attack was part of a wider international conspiracy, with alleged links to operatives in Europe, the US and Canada who provided funds, logistical backing and hardware. Kumar had been on the run since the NIA’s earlier raids in Gurdaspur and was eventually traced to Gaya through human and technical intelligence.
The grenade attack, which shocked Punjab earlier this year, is still under investigation, with officials suggesting more arrests could follow as they unravel cross-border networks.
