Patna: The Bihar government has announced financial incentives for setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state as part of its efforts to strengthen charging infrastructure, promote electric mobility, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
According to Transport Department Secretary Raj Kumar, subsidies ranging from Rs 75,000 to Rs 2.25 lakh will be provided for different categories of EV chargers. In the case of high-capacity fast chargers, the incentive can go up to Rs 15 lakh per charger.
The initiative forms part of the Bihar Electric Vehicle Policy and is aimed at creating a reliable charging network to encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles.
Charging Infrastructure to Be Expanded Across State
The Transport Department plans to establish charging stations at strategic locations, including national highways, state highways, petrol pumps, hotels, motels, bus terminals, commercial centres, parking facilities and other public spaces.
The scheme will also be open to private individuals and housing societies, allowing them to apply for subsidies to install EV charging infrastructure.
Raj Kumar said the limited availability of charging stations remains one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in Bihar, particularly for long-distance travel.
He said the incentives are intended to address this gap and ensure convenient access to charging facilities for EV users across the state.
Fuel Savings and Environmental Benefits
The state government estimates that wider adoption of electric vehicles could help save around 7.5 crore litres of petrol and diesel annually.
Officials said the expansion of EV infrastructure is expected to contribute to lower fuel consumption and support efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
Modern charging infrastructure will also be developed along national highways and in urban centres under the Centre’s PM E-DRIVE scheme, according to the Transport Department.
Incentives Approved for EV Buyers
The charging station subsidy complements the state’s broader strategy to increase EV adoption.
On May 13, 2026, the Bihar cabinet approved the Chief Minister Bihar Environment-Friendly Transport Employment Scheme and the Bihar Electric Vehicle (Amendment) Policy, 2026.
Under the scheme, women purchasing electric four-wheelers will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs 1 lakh. Women buying electric two-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs 12,000.
Buyers from the general category will receive Rs 10,000 for electric two-wheelers, while beneficiaries from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities will be eligible for Rs 12,000 per vehicle.
For electric commercial three-wheelers, the subsidy has been fixed at Rs 50,000 for general category beneficiaries and up to Rs 60,000 for SC and ST beneficiaries.
The incentives will be available during the 2026–27 financial year.
Bihar Targets 30 Per Cent EV Adoption by 2030
The state government has set a target of “EV 30@30”, under which 30 per cent of all newly purchased and registered vehicles in Bihar are expected to be electric by 2030.
Officials believe that a stronger charging network, combined with purchase incentives, will help accelerate the transition towards electric mobility in the coming years.
Subsidy Structure for EV Charging Stations
Under the policy, the first 900 AC chargers with three-gun slow or medium charging capacity will receive a subsidy covering 75 per cent of equipment costs, along with Rs 15,000 towards installation. The maximum assistance per charger will be Rs 75,000.
For the first 450 AC fast chargers with two-gun configuration, the government will provide 75 per cent of equipment costs and Rs 37,500 towards installation expenses, subject to a maximum subsidy of Rs 2.25 lakh per charger.
The same subsidy structure will apply to the first 450 DC slow and medium chargers with two-gun configuration.
For the first 90 CCS/CHAdeMO fast chargers, applicants will receive 50 per cent of equipment costs and Rs 1.5 lakh towards installation expenses. The maximum subsidy under this category will be capped at Rs 15 lakh per charger.
