Sitamarhi/Patna: Bihar has opened its first fish brood bank in Sitamarhi, with the state government expecting the facility to improve the availability of quality fish seed, increase production and create employment opportunities.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary inaugurated the facility at Bakhri on Saturday, marking the beginning of fish brood production and the distribution of improved fish seed in the state.
The initiative is also expected to benefit hatchery operators by providing access to quality brood fish at affordable rates, reducing their dependence on supplies from other states.
40-Acre Facility To Produce Disease-Free Fish Seed
Built at a cost of Rs 10.92 crore, the brood bank is spread over 40 acres and will use modern scientific methods to rear healthy, large and genetically superior fish.
The facility will produce disease-free fish seed, with a focus on Indian Major Carps and other fish species.
The availability of locally produced, affordable and quality seed is expected to increase fish production and support employment in the fisheries sector. The government also hopes improved production will create opportunities for exports.
Chaudhary said the initiative would strengthen the fisheries sector while creating opportunities for hatchery operators and others associated with fish production.
Rs 76.60 Crore Milk Powder Plant Also Underway
The deputy chief minister also launched construction of a Rs 76.60 crore milk powder plant in Sitamarhi.
The fully automated facility is expected to add 30 metric tonnes of milk powder production capacity a day, strengthening milk processing and value addition in North Bihar.
The plant will enable the regular procurement of surplus milk from dairy farmers in the region, potentially providing farmers with a more stable market and encouraging higher milk production.
Milk can be converted into powder for longer-term storage, allowing surplus production to be preserved and used when market demand increases.

Push For Sudha And Dairy Value Addition
The government expects the plant to increase Bihar’s milk processing capacity and strengthen the market potential of the Sudha brand.
The project is also expected to generate direct and indirect employment while supporting ancillary economic activity in the region.
The government sees the two projects as part of a broader effort to strengthen Bihar’s fisheries and dairy sectors by increasing local production, processing capacity and value addition.
