Siwan/Patna: Police in the Siwan district of Bihar have resolved a high-profile case within 12 hours of it being reported, concluding that a young woman’s dramatic account of being abducted from a school gate and raped in a moving vehicle was entirely fabricated.
The initial report claimed that two sisters had been snatched by men in a Scorpio vehicle near a local school on Saturday, drugged or assaulted, and later dumped by a roadside after one suffered severe injuries. The case drew immediate outrage and mobilized four separate police teams.
However, during a press briefing, Siwan Superintendent of Police (SP) Puran Kumar Jha announced that a thorough technical and forensic investigation completely dismantled the original narrative.
How the Investigation Unraveled
SP Jha stated that investigators harbored doubts about the kidnapping story from the outset. The alleged abduction site was a densely populated area in the middle of the city, yet no witnesses reported a struggle, and six hours elapsed before the emergency Dial-112 service was contacted.
“We constituted four separate teams to trace the route from the school to where the girls were found, and analyzed call detail records,” SP Jha said. “The digital footprint and physical evidence pointed to an entirely different sequence of events.”
Investigators discovered that the young woman had been in a relationship since last December with Abhishek Varnwal, a resident of Baletha who worked in Mumbai and had recently returned home.
On the day of the incident, the woman, her younger sister, and Varnwal—accompanied by a male friend—visited a hotel in the Nagar police station area. Police confirmed that the woman and her partner engaged in sexual relations, during which her health deteriorated significantly due to excessive internal bleeding and trauma.
Fear of Social Stigma and Family
Frightened by the medical emergency and panicked when the bleeding would not stop, the two men abandoned their plan to seek immediate medical help. Instead, out of fear, they drove the sisters back and left them near a roadside field close to their home before fleeing.
When police and medical responders arrived following the 112 call, the young woman—fearing severe family repercussions and the social stigma of a premarital relationship—concocted the story of a violent daytime abduction by strangers.
Doctors at Sadar Hospital confirmed that the young woman did suffer severe injury to her internal genital area requiring stitches due to the intensity of the bleeding, though her condition has since stabilized and she is out of danger.
Arrests Made
While the allegations of a forced abduction and gang-rape have been officially dismissed as false, police have arrested Abhishek Varnwal and his friend in connection with the hotel rendezvous and the subsequent abandonment of the injured woman. Forensic teams have recovered material evidence from the hotel room, and further legal proceedings are underway.
