Patna: In a major boost for rural Bihar, the state government has announced that 1.1 kilowatt rooftop solar panels will be installed free of charge for households under the Kutir Jyoti category. The scheme is designed to provide relief from monthly electricity bills and encourage self-reliance among economically disadvantaged families.
Eligible households will need to provide their consent through the Suvidha mobile application. Following registration, government teams will install the solar panels at no cost. Officials have emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader push to increase the use of clean and renewable energy in rural areas, while also offering long-term, safe, and sustainable electricity to consumers.
“Solar energy is the need of the future. It benefits the environment and ensures reliable electricity for rural households without adding to pollution,” engineers involved in the project said.
The scheme builds on the existing Kutir Jyoti Yojana, launched in 1988–89, which aimed to provide single-point electricity connections to rural families living below the poverty line. By integrating solar technology, the government hopes to improve living standards in villages while taking a significant step toward green energy adoption.
