Patna: The Bihar government has approved a series of measures to modernise government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), improve student facilities and strengthen skill-based employment opportunities across the state.
The decisions were taken during a meeting chaired by Youth, Employment and Skill Development Minister Arun Shankar Prasad, where officials reviewed ITI infrastructure, skill training, apprenticeship programmes and student welfare.
Solar Panels to Be Installed Across Government ITIs
Solar panels will be installed at all government ITIs in Bihar as part of the state’s efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce electricity expenses.
The move is expected to lower the institutions’ dependence on conventional power and reduce operational costs over the long term. It will also provide students with greater exposure to renewable energy and sustainable practices.
Land Acquisition for Skill University
The government has also decided to initiate the land acquisition process for Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Skill University.
The proposed university is expected to strengthen vocational and skill-based education and create a more structured, employment-oriented ecosystem for students pursuing ITI and other technical training programmes.
NAPS Implementation to Be Accelerated
Officials were directed to expedite implementation of the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) across all nodal ITIs.
The initiative aims to provide students with practical industry exposure alongside their technical training, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and employment requirements.
Alumni Associations to Be Formed
The government has also decided to establish alumni associations at state-run ITIs.
Through these associations, former students will remain connected with their institutes and can contribute by sharing professional experiences, career guidance and industry-related knowledge with current students.
Women’s ITIs to Get Hostels Under PPP Model
To improve access to technical education for female students, the government plans to invite tenders for constructing hostels at Women’s ITIs that currently lack residential facilities.
The hostels will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, potentially making it easier for students from distant areas to enrol in and attend technical training programmes.
Public Invited to Donate Land for ITIs
The government has also decided to invite land donations for government ITIs that currently do not have their own buildings.
Under the proposal, ITIs could be named after individuals who donate land or their ancestors, providing an incentive for local participation in developing technical education infrastructure.
Officials, including Skill Development Department Secretary Kaushal Kishore and Director Ranjit Kumar, attended the meeting.
The decisions are aimed at strengthening Bihar’s ITI infrastructure while expanding renewable energy use, apprenticeship opportunities, student accommodation and industry linkages.
