Patna: Bihar’s chief secretary Pratyaya Amrit has ordered a crackdown on late attendance and absenteeism in government offices, warning of strict action, including salary deductions, for violations.
In a directive issued to all departmental heads and district officials, the state government has asked employees to adhere strictly to office timings and maintain discipline throughout working hours.
Salary Cuts For Late Attendance
Officials said employees arriving late without available leave balance will face salary deductions for the corresponding period.
Drawing and disbursing officers have been instructed to prepare salary bills strictly based on attendance records, with accountability fixed for any lapses.
Surprise Inspections Planned
The chief secretary has directed authorities to conduct surprise inspections to ensure compliance.
The order states that arbitrary conduct and habitual late reporting will not be tolerated, signalling a tougher stance on workplace discipline.
Revised Office Timings
The government has reiterated standard working hours:
- Five-day offices: 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with a lunch break from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
- Female employees: 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM
- Six-day offices (including divisional and technical offices): 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, shifting to 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM in winter
Biometric Attendance To Be Strictly Enforced
While biometric attendance was introduced in 2022, officials said its implementation will now be tightened.
Amrit said laxity in attendance undermines administrative efficiency, and strict enforcement is necessary to improve governance standards.
The move is part of a broader effort to streamline government functioning and ensure accountability across departments, with officials warning that non-compliance will invite disciplinary action.
