Patna: The Bihar Education Department has decided to implement a four-phase learning programme to strengthen basic reading, writing and mathematics skills among students studying in Classes 4 to 6 across the state.
The initiative comes after concerns were raised about many students in these classes struggling with foundational literacy and numeracy. To address the issue, Education Department officials are planning structured learning activities aimed at improving language and mathematics skills.
Education Secretary Dinesh Kumar has issued directions to all District Education Officers (DEOs) and District Programme Officers (DPOs) to implement the programme in their respective districts.
According to the plan, the first phase will be conducted from April to May. During this period, schools will organise classes focused on simple and engaging activities related to language and mathematics. The first teaching period of the day will be dedicated to language, while the second period will focus on mathematics.
At the school level, two teachers will be assigned responsibility for implementing the programme. During this phase, resource persons will also be identified at the block and school complex levels, and teachers will undergo orientation sessions to help them conduct activity-based learning.
The second phase will begin in June. In this stage, volunteers and community members will also participate in activity-based teaching efforts. Summer camps will be organised specifically for students of Classes 5 and 6 to strengthen their learning in language and mathematics.
The third phase of the programme will run from July to September and will focus on continuing academic support and reinforcing foundational learning among students.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at improving the basic academic abilities of students and ensuring that children in middle grades achieve the expected learning levels in reading, writing and mathematics. Further guidelines for subsequent phases are expected to be shared with schools as the programme progresses.
