Patna: All government schools in Bihar will shift to morning classes from April 6, with around 80,000 institutions across the state expected to follow the revised timetable aimed at avoiding rising daytime temperatures and streamlining academic hours.
Under the new schedule, schools will begin at 6.30am with a 30-minute prayer and morning assembly session, and will conclude at 12.20pm. Teachers will remain on campus until 12.30pm.
The revised timetable has been issued in several districts in line with earlier directives from the Director of Secondary Education (Memo No. 664, dated April 4, 2025).
According to the schedule, the first three teaching periods will run between 7am and 9am, each lasting 40 minutes, followed by a 40-minute recess from 9am to 9.40am. Mid-day meals will be served during this break in primary schools.
After the interval, classes will resume at 9.40am, continuing through four further periods until 12.20pm.
The final hour of instruction will conclude with structured academic work, after which students will be dismissed. Teachers will use the remaining 10 minutes of the school day to review lessons, assess homework and plan for the following day under the headmaster’s supervision.
Education department officials said monitoring mechanisms have been strengthened to ensure consistent implementation and to maintain instructional quality across schools.
