Patna: Bihar remains in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 44°C in several districts and little immediate relief in sight, according to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department’s Patna centre.
Temperatures Breach 44°C
The highest maximum temperature of 44.4°C was recorded in Buxar on April 22, making it one of the hottest locations in the state. Across Bihar, maximum temperatures ranged between 36.2°C and 44.4°C, with no significant change observed over the past 24 hours.
Minimum temperatures also remained high, ranging between 21.0°C and 27.7°C, with Nalanda recording the lowest minimum temperature at 21°C.
Heatwave Conditions Spread
Heatwave (loo) conditions were reported in districts including Motihari (East Champaran), Buxar and Sheikhpura, indicating a widening spread of extreme heat across both northern and southern regions of the state.
The bulletin further noted strong winds, with Patna recording gusts of up to 52 kmph, although these offered little respite from the prevailing heat.

No Rain, Dry Spell Continues
The state recorded no rainfall in the past 24 hours, and dry weather conditions are expected to persist across most regions in the immediate term.
Forecast charts in the bulletin indicate largely dry conditions across north, central and south Bihar for the next couple of days, with only isolated rainfall expected later in the week.
Fresh Heatwave Warning Issued
The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to continue, particularly in the south-western and south-central parts of Bihar.
Over the next 24 hours, temperatures in several regions—including south-west, north-west and south-central Bihar—are expected to exceed 40°C and remain 3–4 degrees above normal.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next three to four days, suggesting a prolonged spell of intense heat.
Slight Relief Possible Later
While the heatwave is expected to persist in the short term, the forecast indicates a gradual shift in weather conditions from April 24 onwards, with possibilities of thunderstorms, lightning and light rainfall in some districts, particularly in north and north-eastern Bihar.
However, officials caution that any relief is likely to be temporary and localised.
Advisory Issued
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including avoiding outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, staying hydrated, and wearing light clothing.
With temperatures remaining persistently high and heatwave conditions continuing, Bihar is likely to face challenging weather conditions over the coming days.
