Patna: The Bihar health department has directed hospitals across the state to step up preparations for heat-related illnesses, amid forecasts of rising temperatures in the coming weeks.
In a letter issued to civil surgeons and hospital administrators, health secretary Lokesh Kumar instructed authorities to ensure the availability of dedicated wards and sufficient beds for treating heatstroke patients.
24-hour staffing and emergency readiness
Hospitals have been asked to implement round-the-clock duty rosters for doctors and paramedical staff in heatstroke wards. Officials have also been directed to ensure that ambulances are fully equipped, with functional air conditioning, oxygen supply and essential medical equipment.
The department said preparations must be completed in view of the likelihood of unusually high temperatures this summer.
Focus on vulnerable groups
Authorities have been asked to prioritise care for high-risk groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant and lactating women, and people working outdoors.
A coordinated action plan is to be developed with district administrations, covering all levels of healthcare facilities, from medical college hospitals to primary health centres and wellness centres.
Medicines and monitoring
Hospitals have also been instructed to maintain adequate stocks of medicines for treating heat-related conditions such as dehydration, diarrhoea, vomiting, skin and eye problems.
Continuous monitoring of patients has been emphasised, including tracking vital parameters such as heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and mental status.
Infrastructure checks
Officials have been told to ensure that cooling systems, including air conditioners, coolers and fans, remain functional in both specialised and general wards.
The directive forms part of the state’s preparedness measures to minimise health risks and prevent fatalities during the peak summer months.
