Patna: The electoral landscape of Bihar’s Karakat assembly seat has been dramatically altered by the entry of Jyoti Singh, the estranged wife of Bhojpuri cinema star Pawan Singh. On Monday, Jyoti Singh filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate, confirming her plunge into politics despite her high-profile divorce proceedings.
“Now the public is my party,” Jyoti Singh declared, clarifying that she would not align with any established political organization but would contest the elections solely on the basis of people’s trust.
In her affidavit, Jyoti Singh disclosed total assets estimated at Rs 18.8 lakh. This includes a 2024 Grand Vitara car valued at approximately Rs 14 lakh, and 30 grams of gold (a mangalsutra, chain, and ring) worth about Rs 4 lakh. She also declared Rs 80,000 in cash and noted that her assets have not increased over the past five years.
A Candid Disclosure in the Affidavit
The focus immediately turned to the personal narrative driving her candidacy. In the mandatory election affidavit accompanying her nomination, Jyoti Singh made a striking disclosure regarding her marital status, describing herself as a “discarded woman.”
Significantly, she omitted her husband’s name, opting instead to refer to him simply as a “renowned Bhojpuri artist.” This declaration starkly highlights the personal turmoil that has now spilled onto the political stage.

The development follows weeks of speculation that Pawan Singh, who had recently joined the BJP, might contest the same seat. Rumors suggested a sensational husband-versus-wife electoral face-off was imminent. However, Pawan Singh recently ended the speculation via a tweet, clarifying he would not be contesting in the Bihar elections this time.
The couple’s relationship remains a topic of public controversy, with divorce proceedings ongoing. The tensions recently became public when a viral video showed police preventing Jyoti Singh from entering Pawan Singh’s residence. Following this incident, Jyoti leveled several serious allegations against the superstar.
Pawan Singh responded to the allegations in a press conference, appealing for privacy while acknowledging his public stature: “People call me a superstar, but I’m also a human being,” he stated.
