Patna: Ten newly elected members of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLCs), including Bhojpuri actor and singer Pawan Singh and Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar, took the oath of office and secrecy on Wednesday at the Bihar Legislative Council Annexe in Patna.
Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh administered the oath to all the newly elected members. Pawan Singh was the first to take the oath, followed by Nishant Kumar, Sanjay Mayukh, Sunil Kumar Singh and the remaining members. All 10 had been elected unopposed on June 11 after no additional candidates entered the contest.
Leaders Across Political Spectrum Attend
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by senior leaders from both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition.
Among those present were Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Chaudhary, Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav and several legislators and senior officials. Tejashwi Yadav was seen seated alongside Vijay Chaudhary during the ceremony.
All 10 Candidates Were Elected Unopposed
The Legislative Council elections were conducted for 10 seats. As only 10 candidates filed nominations, all were declared elected unopposed without polling.
The newly elected members comprise four candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), four from the Janata Dal (United), one from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and one from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
The election also drew attention after the NDA did not nominate minister Deepak Prakash to the Legislative Council, leading to speculation over his political role.
Lalan Prasad Wins Seat Vacated by Nitish Kumar
Senior JD(U) leader Lalan Prasad was elected unopposed from the Legislative Council seat vacated by former Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) national president Nitish Kumar.
Considered a long-time associate of Nitish Kumar, Lalan Prasad’s elevation is seen as reinforcing his position within the party organisation.
Pawan Singh Makes Legislative Debut
The oath marked Pawan Singh’s first entry into a legislative House.
The BJP had nominated the Bhojpuri actor and singer as its candidate for the Legislative Council elections, citing his popularity among young voters and influence across the Shahabad and Bhojpuri-speaking regions. His nomination is viewed as part of the party’s broader political outreach in the region.
RJD Renominates Sunil Kumar Singh
Senior RJD leader Dr Sunil Kumar Singh also returned to the Legislative Council after being elected unopposed.
A close associate of former Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, Sunil Kumar Singh is known for his active participation in legislative debates. The RJD retained him as its nominee for one of the 10 seats.
LJP (Ram Vilas) Sends Ashraf Ansari to the Council
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) nominated Ashraf Ansari, the party’s Bihar state working president and chief spokesperson, for the Legislative Council.
According to the party, his nomination recognises his organisational work and contribution to strengthening the party in the state. Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan had announced his candidature during the election process.
