Patna: The souvenir shop at the Bihar Museum has emerged as the highest-selling museum store in the country, recording revenue of Rs 1.71 crore over the past year.
The figure marks a significant rise from Rs 1.34 crore in the 2024–25 financial year, reflecting growing demand for locally crafted products and heritage-inspired merchandise.
Showcase Of Bihar’s Craft Traditions
Officials said the store has become a platform for showcasing Bihar’s rich artistic traditions, offering a mix of traditional and contemporary products.
Items on sale include everyday accessories such as keychains, pens and diaries, alongside apparel like sarees, suits, and jackets, as well as home décor products including wall hangings and showpieces.
Strong Demand For Traditional Art
Products featuring Madhubani and Mithila art forms have emerged as major attractions for visitors, while items crafted using traditional Sikki art — including jewellery and jute bags — have also gained popularity.
Handloom products such as Bhagalpuri silk garments and khadi cotton textiles are among the top-selling categories.
Boost For Local Artisans
The store also promotes handmade products such as Bawan Buti khadi sarees woven in Nalanda, aligning with the ‘vocal for local’ initiative.
In addition, products made by prison inmates are available, providing them with a platform for livelihood support.
Prices for garments range from Rs 700 to Rs 7,000, catering to a wide range of customers, including tourists and local buyers.
Economic And Cultural Impact
Ashok Kumar Sinha, additional director of the museum, said the shop plays a dual role by generating revenue and supporting artisan communities.
Officials added that plans are underway to expand the product range further, with the aim of promoting Bihar’s art and culture at both national and international levels.
