Muzaffarpur: An armed robbery occurred late Saturday night in the Riyasi area of Muzaffarpur, a city currently under heightened paramilitary and police security due to the ongoing assembly elections. The brazen attack, carried out by four criminals, has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the district.
The victim, identified as CK Jain, a bank employee posted at the PNB branch in Pankaj Market, was carrying approximately Rs5.25 lakh in cash—funds deposited at his Customer Service Point (CSP). As the bank was closed for the day, he was transporting the funds when the incident took place around 10 p.m. in the Church Road area, near Pani Tanki Chowk, under the Mithanpura police station jurisdiction.
Ambush and Assault
Jain was reportedly walking from Pani Tanki Chowk toward Church Road when a scooter rider stopped him from behind near the junction of Jagdishpuri Lane. The attack escalated rapidly. A criminal immediately brandished a weapon, placing a pistol against Jain’s chest while demanding his possessions.
Within moments, two other criminals, arriving on a motorcycle, joined the attack, making it a four-person operation. The group assaulted the bank employee, pushing him onto the road. They forcibly snatched the two bags, which contained the cash and a bottle of phenyl, from his scooter before speeding off toward Goshala Road PNT Chowk. Jain sustained injuries during the assault.
The victim, who stated he has been operating the CSP for nearly nine years, recounted that the bags were stolen before he could fully comprehend the attack.
Police Launch Investigation
Following the commotion, locals gathered and reported the incident to the police via Dial 112. Although a quick-response team arrived, the criminals had already fled the scene. Subsequently, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and the Mithanpura police station chief arrived with a team to commence a thorough investigation.
Police are currently conducting raids in the area and examining CCTV footage from nearby locations in an effort to identify and apprehend the four armed robbers. The incident is a major challenge to law enforcement as it occurred in a high-security zone during a period of enforced restrictions.
