Patna: The Bihar government has allowed Kutir Jyoti consumers who do not own smartphones to submit their consent for the PM Surya Ghar – Free Electricity Scheme at local electricity offices and special camps. The move aims to ensure that BPL (Below Poverty Line) households are not excluded from the rooftop solar initiative due to limited access to digital devices.
Under the scheme, the process of obtaining consent from eligible households is currently underway through the Suvidha app under the ULA mode. However, many low-income families have been unable to complete the process digitally. Authorities have therefore provided an offline option for such consumers to submit their consent forms in person.
The deadline to submit consent for participation in the scheme has been set for March 31, 2026. Officials have urged eligible households to complete the process within the stipulated time so they can be included in the installation phase.
As part of the initiative, rooftop solar panels with a capacity of 1.1 kilowatts will be installed on the homes of Kutir Jyoti consumers. In the first phase, the government plans to install panels on approximately 2.5 lakh houses across the state.
All installed systems will be connected to the electricity grid, allowing households to use the power generated from the solar panels on their rooftops. After receiving consent, departmental teams will visit the homes of applicants to conduct site inspections.
Solar panels will be installed free of cost in houses with suitable rooftops that are free from shade. Once the project is completed, it is expected to generate around 275 megawatts of electricity, contributing to Bihar’s push towards renewable energy and reducing electricity costs for low-income households.
