Patna/Motihari: Police in the town of Motihari, Bihar, are searching for a missing pet cat after its owner filed a complaint alleging theft. The case, registered on Christmas Eve, has drawn widespread attention on social media and sparked debate about the role of police in cases involving animals.
Rajesh Kumar, who lives in Ward 20 near Mujib Girls School, reported that his golden-coloured male cat — known locally as ‘Meow’ — vanished on December 24. He told officers that the animal had lived with the family for six months and had become “like a member of the household,” often returning home each evening after roaming the neighbourhood. This time, he said, it did not come back.
The police have registered the FIR and begun an inquiry. Rajeev Ranjan, the officer in charge at Nagar police station, said a search is underway and CCTV footage is being reviewed. Officers have also circulated a description of the cat, including its distinctive appearance: golden fur and a right eye that reportedly weeps slightly.
“We will check the surrounding areas and speak to residents. The family suspects theft, and the matter is being examined from all angles,” Ranjan said. If the disappearance involves criminal intent, the case could fall under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code, which covers theft.
The incident has gone viral online, with some praising the family’s dedication and others questioning whether police resources should be used. Legal experts point out that under animal welfare laws, complaints can be filed if a pet is harmed or stolen.
Local animal welfare groups have backed the family and plan to distribute posters and appeals online. The Motihari Animal Welfare Society has urged residents to report any sightings of a golden cat matching the description.
The family says the cat’s disappearance has left a noticeable emotional gap. Rajesh Kumar’s children, in particular, are described as distraught. “The house feels empty,” he said.
