Patna: On the 77th Republic Day of India, Bihar Police will witness a proud and memorable moment as 22 of its officers and personnel receive prestigious national awards. These honours are being given to recognise their bravery, long years of service and strong commitment to duty. The announcement has brought joy and excitement across the police department, as such awards highlight the hard work and risks that police officers take every day to protect society.
Among the award winners, three officers will receive the Police Medal for Gallantry, which is given for acts of great courage in dangerous situations. These officers are IPS officer Kundan Krishnan, retired Deputy Superintendent of Police Arjun Lal, and Sub-Inspector Jitendra Singh. Two officers, Deputy Superintendent Umesh Lal Rajak and Sub-Inspector Navratna Kumar, will receive the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service for their long and honest careers. In addition, 17 police officers and personnel will be awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service for their dedication and excellent performance.
IPS officer Kundan Krishnan is being honoured for his brave role in the 2002 Saran jail mutiny in Chhapra. At that time, prisoners became violent after opposing transfer orders. They collected weapons and explosives and took control of the jail, attacking police and jail staff. The situation became extremely dangerous and could have led to even more loss of life.
Despite the risk, Kundan Krishnan personally led the operation to bring the jail back under control. His team used tear gas and other methods to stop the rioting prisoners. After several hours, the situation was finally controlled. During the operation, many police personnel were injured, and weapons and bomb materials were recovered from inside the jail. This brave action is still remembered as one of the most courageous operations in Bihar Police history.
The remaining 17 officers who will receive the Meritorious Service Medal include Daljit Singh, Rajiv Ranjan, Ajay Kumar Pandey, Shailesh Mishra, Mohammad Ainul Haque, Rishikesh Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Nikku Kumar Singh, Nagendra Pandey, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Sukra Oraon, Dharmendra Kumar, Jawaharlal Mandal, Umesh Kumar Singh, Omprakash, Mohammad Rafi and Manoj Kumar Singh. These officers have been recognised for their consistent and sincere work over many years.
Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar congratulated all the awardees and said their courage and dedication are the strength of the police force. He added that such honours motivate other officers to serve the public with honesty and bravery. As Bihar celebrates Republic Day, these awards remind everyone of the sacrifices and hard work of the police who keep the state safe.
