Muzaffarpur: Two trucks seized for GST evasion have mysteriously disappeared from a police station in Bihar, sparking concern over the security of impounded vehicles in the state.
The trucks, loaded with smuggled goods, went missing from the Motipur police station premises in the early hours of January 2. An FIR was filed by Sub-Inspector Umashankar Singh following the theft, naming the unknown drivers and the vehicle owners—Ajay Tiwari of Bardahiya Bazaar, Khalilabad, and Vimal Tiwari of Kakupar, Gorakhpur—as accused. The trucks, bearing UP registration plates, had been missing for four days at the time of reporting. Police have launched an intensified search while coordinating with the owners.
According to the FIR, GST officials had seized three trucks transporting goods from Muzaffarpur to Uttar Pradesh on December 31, after the drivers failed to produce valid GST documentation. The trucks were handed to the Motipur police station, with a seizure list prepared by the GST Assistant Commissioner. The two missing vehicles—UP-53 ET 1421 and UP-53 DT 1358—were allegedly taken in collusion by their drivers and owners between 2 and 3 AM, exploiting the darkness and dense fog.
Sub-Inspector Singh noted that the Motipur police station operates from an old building of the local sugar mill and lacks a proper facility, leaving seized vehicles exposed in an open ground.
The disappearance is not an isolated incident. Trucks previously seized by Karja, Sadar, and Ahiyapur police stations have similarly gone missing, sometimes due to alleged collusion between police officials and vehicle owners. In one such case in Karja, trucks carrying sand were released improperly by a sub-inspector, prompting official action once the irregularity came to light.
