Patna: Bihar is once again facing intense summer conditions after a brief spell of thunderstorms and rain brought temporary relief from the heat. Clear skies have returned across much of the state, causing temperatures to rise rapidly, with several districts already recording temperatures above 40°C.
The Meteorological Centre has issued a severe heat warning for six districts — Buxar, Bhojpur, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad and Arwal. While no official heatwave alert has been announced, weather officials have cautioned residents about the possibility of extreme daytime temperatures. Patna and Gaya could see temperatures climb as high as 43C in the coming days.
On Tuesday, Kaimur district recorded the state’s highest temperature at 41.4°C. Other areas, including Dehri, Bhagalpur and Sheikhpura, also reported temperatures close to the 40°C mark. Isolated thunderstorms and light rain were reported in Sasaram and Gaya, while cloud cover persisted in parts of Buxar and Aurangabad.
Meteorologists say the recent rise in temperatures follows a decline in pre-monsoon rainfall activity. Showers during the final week of May and the beginning of June had lowered temperatures across the state, but reduced cloud cover and prolonged sunshine are now allowing the ground to heat up more quickly.
The southwest monsoon remains some distance from Bihar and is expected to reach the state between June 12 and 16 Jun. Until then, hot winds and humid conditions are likely to continue. According to weather experts, temperatures could remain between 40°C and 43°C across large parts of the state, particularly in southern and western districts, where heatwave-like conditions may develop if monsoon progress slows.
In Patna, clear skies are forecast throughout Wednesday, with temperatures expected to range from around 28°C in the morning to 37°C during the afternoon. Rainfall chances remain minimal, and residents have been advised to take precautions against prolonged exposure to the sun.
