Patna: Patna is set to receive a significant boost to its public transport infrastructure with the launch of a new 24-hour compressed natural gas (CNG) station at the Phulwarisharif Bus Depot. The project, being developed by GAIL India, is expected to provide uninterrupted fuel supply to nearly 400 buses, helping improve operational efficiency across the city’s transport network.
Officials say the station will operate round the clock, allowing buses to refuel at any time of the day or night. The move is expected to reduce delays caused by fuel shortages and ensure smoother services for commuters who rely on public transport across the state capital.
The initiative is also being viewed as an important step towards reducing Patna’s dependence on diesel-powered vehicles. CNG is widely regarded as a cleaner alternative fuel, producing lower emissions and contributing less to air pollution. With air quality remaining a growing concern in many Indian cities, the expansion of CNG infrastructure is expected to support broader environmental goals.
The Phulwarisharif facility is part of a larger expansion plan by GAIL India. The company is preparing to open three new CNG stations in the Patna region next week, including facilities at Naubatpur and Transport Nagar. The expansion is aimed at improving access to cleaner fuel for a wider range of vehicles.
While the immediate benefit will be felt by public transport operators, the new stations are also expected to serve private and commercial vehicle owners. Improved availability of CNG could encourage more motorists to shift towards cleaner fuel options, strengthening the city’s fuel distribution network and supporting efforts to create a more sustainable urban transport system.
