Officials said the airport will be developed at Dariyapur Chawar, located north of the Sonpur–Chhapra four-lane National Highway and west of the Gandak River. The project will require the acquisition of approximately 4,228 acres of land. The proposal is expected to be formally cleared in an upcoming state cabinet meeting, allowing the government to begin land acquisition and construction procedures.
According to planning documents, the airport will feature a runway measuring approximately 4,200 metres, built in accordance with international aviation standards. The runway length will allow large commercial aircraft to operate safely, enabling both domestic and long-haul international flights. Authorities said the project is designed to accommodate growing passenger demand and reduce congestion at existing airports serving the region.
To ensure seamless connectivity with Patna and nearby districts, infrastructure upgrades are already underway. These include the construction of two new six-lane bridges parallel to existing crossings, which will improve access and reduce travel time between the state capital and the new airport. Improved road connectivity is expected to play a key role in supporting passenger and cargo movement.
Once operational, the Sonpur greenfield airport will allow round-the-clock flight operations, similar to major metropolitan airports across India. The development is expected to benefit millions of passengers and strengthen economic growth by improving connectivity for business, tourism and logistics. The state government is also planning additional airport projects in several districts, reflecting a broader effort to modernise Bihar’s aviation network and support long-term regional development.
