Patna: The Bihar government has relieved Inspector General (Operations) of the Special Task Force (STF), Vinay Kumar, paving the way for his appointment as an Inspector General in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on central deputation.
A notification issued by the state Home Department on Tuesday confirmed that the services of the 2004-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Bihar cadre have been placed at the disposal of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Kumar will be relieved from his current responsibilities from the date he formally hands over charge. He was also holding additional charge as Inspector General (Headquarters).
As IG of the Bihar STF, Vinay Kumar has been at the forefront of operations against organised crime, mafia networks and high-profile criminal activity across the state. Since December 2024, the STF under his leadership has carried out a series of significant crackdowns, including coordinated raids and encounters targeting wanted criminals.
Over the course of his career, Kumar has served in several key field and supervisory roles, including as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General. He is regarded for his handling of security operations in Naxal-affected regions and for overseeing complex investigations linked to organised crime.
With the Bihar government issuing the required no-objection certificate, Kumar is set to take up his new role at the NIA, the country’s premier counter-terrorism and national security investigation agency.
Officials indicated that he may not be the only senior officer to move to the Centre. As many as 16 IPS officers from the Bihar cadre, including several from the 1996 to 2004 batches, are expected to proceed on central deputation in the coming weeks, signalling a significant reshuffle at the senior levels of the state police administration.
