Patna: The South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited has introduced a Time of Day (ToD) tariff system, offering cheaper electricity during daytime hours while increasing rates during peak evening periods.
Under the new structure, electricity will be 20% cheaper between 9 am and 5 pm. During this off-peak period, domestic consumers will pay Rs 5.94 per unit instead of the standard Rs 7.42.
However, tariffs will rise during peak hours from 5 pm to 11 pm. Domestic users will be charged 10% more, at Rs 8.16 per unit. Commercial and industrial consumers will face a 20% increase, paying 120% of the standard rate.
The normal tariff will apply from 11 pm to 9 am.
Pankaj Kumar, executive engineer (urban) for the Bhagalpur supply area, said the move is aimed at reducing consumer expenses, easing pressure on the power system and encouraging efficient use of energy, including solar power.
The system will apply to domestic and commercial consumers with a load of 1 kilowatt or more who are using smart meters. Consumers with loads above 10 kilowatts will be charged an additional 10% over the prescribed rates.
Agricultural consumers connected to dedicated feeders have been excluded from the new tariff structure.
Officials said the day has been divided into three segments — off-peak, peak and normal — and electricity bills will now be generated based on usage during these time slots.
The initiative is expected to encourage consumers to shift electricity usage to daytime hours, thereby balancing demand and improving overall grid efficiency.
