Patna: Bihar is preparing to give a major boost to water-based tourism by transforming its lakes, rivers, ponds and dams into new tourist destinations.
The Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department has prepared a master plan under which 276 water bodies across the state have been identified for tourism development. More than 70 water bodies are expected to be taken up in the first phase.
The planned destinations will offer boating, water sports, nature-based activities and other facilities aimed at attracting tourists.
Ganga, Kanwar Lake and Falgu Among Key Locations
Several prominent water bodies have been identified for the first phase of the project.
These include the Ganga River in Patna, Kanwar Lake in Begusarai, Falgu River in Gaya, Ghodakatora in Nalanda and Kakolat in Nawada.
The government is also planning boating and water-sport activities on rivers such as the Gandak, Kosi, Son and Punpun.
The development is expected to create new attractions for both local visitors and tourists from outside Bihar.
Floating Jetties, Speed Boats and Cruises Planned
Tourist facilities will include floating jetties at selected water bodies, allowing visitors to access different types of boats and water-based activities.
The plan includes around 10 types of boats, including:
- Speed boats
- Jet skis
- Shikaras
- Houseboats
- Pedal boats
- Motor boats
- Kayaks
- Canoes
- Rafts
- Rowing boats
The range of activities is expected to cater to both families looking for recreational outings and tourists interested in adventure sports.
Bird Watching and River Safaris to Be Added
The water tourism plan will not be limited to boating and adventure activities.
Nature-based experiences such as bird watching and river safaris are also being planned. These activities will allow visitors to explore the natural surroundings and wildlife around the state’s rivers and wetlands.
The initiative could also help promote lesser-known destinations by linking their natural attractions with tourism infrastructure.
Ponds and Dams to Be Developed Under PPP Model
According to the plan, several ponds and dams will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The government aims to make water tourism accessible to ordinary visitors rather than limiting it to high-end tourism. Affordable recreational options for families are expected to be a key focus of the development.
Private participation could also help bring investment and professional tourism services to selected locations.
Target to Attract 12 Lakh Tourists Every Month
The government has set an ambitious target of attracting around 12 lakh tourists every month through the state’s water tourism initiatives.
To support this target, tourism-related infrastructure around water bodies is also expected to be strengthened. Hotels, resorts, restaurants and local transport services could see increased demand as visitor numbers rise.
More Than 10,000 Jobs Expected
The water tourism initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities for local communities.
More than 10,000 jobs are estimated to be generated through activities and services linked to the projects. Potential employment opportunities include boat operators, lifeguards, tour guides and security personnel.
The growth in tourism could also benefit hotels, restaurants, local transport providers, small businesses, food vendors and handicraft sellers.
Water Tourism Could Give Bihar’s Tourism Sector a New Identity
The government believes that systematic development of the state’s water resources could give Bihar a new identity as a tourism destination.
By combining boating, water sports, nature experiences and supporting infrastructure, the initiative aims to increase tourist footfall while creating new opportunities for local employment, businesses and the tourism economy.
