Patna: The monsoon has once again become active in Bihar, bringing widespread rainfall across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 25 districts on Saturday, warning of moderate to heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning.
Rainfall was reported in Jehanabad early Saturday morning, following heavy showers on Friday across 20 districts including Patna, Siwan, Aurangabad, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Banka, Hajipur, Nawada, Begusarai, and Samastipur. In Nawada, the Sadar Hospital premises were flooded due to the downpour.
Bay of Bengal System Behind Weather Shift
Meteorological scientists have attributed the rainfall to a strengthened low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is influencing weather conditions across Bihar. This system is expected to keep the state under the spell of intermittent rain for the next three days.
“This situation will remain for the next 72 hours, with widespread intermittent rain across Bihar,” said a Meteorological Center scientist.
Rainfall Brings Relief from Humid Heat
In Patna, Friday began with heavy rainfall and overcast skies, plunging the city into near darkness during the morning hours. However, by afternoon, the skies cleared up, and humid conditions returned briefly due to strong sunlight.
The rains, however, brought much-needed relief from sweltering humidity, as the maximum temperature in Patna dropped by 5°C, offering a temporary respite to residents.
Wind and Lightning Warning Issued
The Meteorological Department has also warned of wind speeds reaching 40 km/h and possible lightning in several regions under the yellow alert. Citizens are advised to exercise caution.
“Avoid taking shelter under trees during rain, and follow safety alerts received on your mobile phones,” urged the IMD in its public advisory.
Forecast for Patna and the Week Ahead
Intermittent rainfall is expected to continue in Patna over the weekend and into early next week. Saturday is likely to bring cloudy skies with moderate rainfall, and the city’s maximum temperature is expected to remain between 32°C to 34°C, while the minimum may hover around 25°C to 26°C.
Bihar Records 44% Rainfall Deficit
Despite the recent surge in monsoon activity, Bihar is still facing a significant rainfall deficit. According to data, the state should have received 442.3 mm of rain by now, but only 248.3 mm has been recorded so far—44% below normal.
More Rain Expected After July 29
The IMD has also predicted that a new weather system may develop in the Bay of Bengal around July 29, potentially bringing more intense rainfall, particularly to North Bihar. South Bihar is likely to see light to moderate showers with consistent cloud cover over the coming week.
