Darbhanga: A political controversy has erupted in Bihar’s Mithila region after BJP MLA Ketakee Singh, representing Bansdih in Uttar Pradesh, threw a ceremonial turban during an NDA workers’ convention in Alinagar, Darbhanga, on October 22. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, drew criticism from local residents who said the act hurt regional sentiments.
Singh, who was the chief guest at the event, defended her actions, saying the paag holds “honour for me too” and expressing respect for Mithila’s cultural traditions. Addressing concerns about her conduct, she stated, “The turban is a matter of honour not only for me but for any Indian anywhere in the world. We all view it with respect.”
She also linked the gesture to broader social respect, adding that every daughter in society, including Maithili Thakur—present at the event and hailed as a prominent cultural figure—deserves the same reverence as the turban. “We respect Mother Sita with the same respect as this paag, and we should also respect Maithili Thakur, the daughter of Mithila,” Singh said.
The MLA emphasised that she had no intention of showing disrespect. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself honours the paag, so for a small worker like me, there’s no question of disrespect,” she said.
Singh also made remarks about the Brahmin community, describing Brahmins as “guides of society” and stating that their position is highly revered. “Brahmins are revered, and I believe their position in this entire society is the highest. We touch their feet and bow to them. In any religious ceremony, they are worshipped after God,” she said.
