Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Bihar, naming Nitin Nabin and Shivesh Kumar. The decision was approved by the party’s central election committee, which released a broader list of nominees for several states.
Party leaders said the move reflects a carefully considered political strategy. The BJP indicated that organisational balance and broader political messaging in Bihar were key factors in selecting the candidates. The Rajya Sabha polls are being viewed as significant for reinforcing the National Democratic Alliance’s strength in the upper house of parliament.
Shivesh Kumar, one of the nominees, previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Sasaram but was unsuccessful. Known within party circles as a grassroots leader, he is regarded as having a strong connect with the Scheduled Caste community. He has also served as national vice-president of the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha and has held several organisational responsibilities at the state level.
He is the son of the late Muni Lal, a former Union minister who represented Sasaram in parliament three times and served in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Party leaders describe his nomination as a continuation of that political legacy.
State BJP president Sanjay Saraogi said the NDA would file nominations for all five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar. He confirmed that the BJP would field two candidates, while its allies — including the Janata Dal (United) — would contest the remaining seats under the alliance arrangement. All candidates are expected to file their nominations on March 5.
