Patna: Patna is set to introduce “bottle banks” across the city as part of the No Plastic Fantastic campaign, a step towards making the city cleaner and free from plastic waste.
The initiative, launched by the Patna Municipal Corporation and Smart City Mission, will place collection bins at public spaces and Ganga ghats, allowing residents to dispose of plastic bottles responsibly. Each bottle bank will stand about 7 feet tall and hold between 350 and 500 bottles.
According to municipal commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar, the effort is designed to protect both the city and the Ganga from plastic pollution. In its first phase, 20 major sites and ghats will be equipped with bottle banks. An additional five mobile units will be deployed during rallies, fairs and other events.
The collected bottles will be sent to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centre where they will be crushed into granules and repurposed for manufacturing bricks, packaging materials and other products. Organisers estimate that between 20,000 and 25,000 plastic bottles could be recycled every month.
The project is being implemented with support from Shubham Kumar of the Being Helper Foundation, who is overseeing the construction of the bottle banks.
Authorities said the campaign would not only make Patna cleaner but also help safeguard rivers from the mounting threat of plastic pollution.
