Patna: Passengers of the Buxar–Tata Superfast Express were thrown into panic on Monday when smoke and flames were spotted in one of the train’s compartments near Kalajharia village in Jharkhand.
The incident occurred between Vidyasagar and Jamtara stations around midday. According to officials, smoke was first seen rising from the third compartment behind the engine. The driver halted the train immediately, prompting frightened passengers to jump off in fear of the fire spreading. No serious injuries were reported.
Railway staff used fire extinguishers to bring the situation under control. Preliminary investigations suggest that a spark from the brake shoe under the train’s wheels may have triggered the fire.
The train was halted at 12.10pm and resumed its journey at 12.42pm after the fire was doused. Officials confirmed that services were delayed by just over half an hour.
A railway spokesperson said the incident is under investigation and added that measures are being taken to strengthen safety protocols for passengers.
