Patna: Residents of Patna attending a free diabetes screening camp at Dr. Divakar Tejashwi Clinic on Exhibition Road were given a detailed explanation of why home glucose readings can differ from laboratory tests. The camp, organised by Public Awareness for Healthful Approach to Living (PAHAL), aimed to raise awareness about diabetes prevention and effective blood sugar management.
Dr. Divakar Tejashwi, Medical Director and Senior Physician of PAHAL, explained that blood sugar can be measured in two ways. Self-testing with a glucometer, which uses a drop of blood from the fingertip, often produces slightly higher readings, particularly after meals. Laboratory tests, which take a blood sample from a vein, offer more accurate and standardised results.
“The difference between glucometer and lab readings is usually 2–10 mg/dl when fasting,” Dr. Tejashwi said. “Two hours after a meal, glucometer readings can be 10–30 mg/dl higher. While glucometers are convenient for daily monitoring, lab tests are necessary for confirmation and an accurate assessment.”
He urged participants to understand these differences to avoid misconceptions and to seek timely treatment, stressing the importance of regular monitoring for diabetes prevention and management.
The camp, held under the aegis of PAHAL, also offered guidance on healthy lifestyle practices and early detection strategies.
