Patna: At least 17 children in Bihar have been diagnosed with acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), locally known as “Chamki Bukhar”, over the past three months, according to state health officials, raising early concerns ahead of the peak summer season.
Data from the health department shows that two of the confirmed cases were identified as Japanese encephalitis. The infections have been reported across several districts, including Muzaffarpur, Shivhar, Gopalganj, Patna, Buxar and Saran.
Officials said no deaths have been recorded so far this year, offering some reassurance compared with previous years. In 2024, the state reported 28 cases and two deaths, while in 2025 there were 22 cases and one death.
Health authorities have urged vigilance, warning that the disease tends to spread more rapidly in hot and humid conditions. They emphasised that early medical intervention significantly improves chances of recovery.
Dr Namrata Kumari, head of microbiology at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Patna, said children between the ages of one and 15 are particularly vulnerable. She advised parents to ensure that children eat properly at night and remain well hydrated.
The department has also instructed doctors to be present in hospitals during the early morning hours, between 4am and 6am, a critical window when symptoms often worsen.
AES is characterised by high fever, convulsions and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness. Doctors recommend immediate first aid and urgent hospitalisation if symptoms appear.
Preventive measures include avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat, maintaining hygiene, ensuring adequate nutrition and administering oral rehydration solutions at the onset of symptoms. Authorities have also advised residents to use state helplines for assistance, including 104 for medical guidance and 102 for ambulance services.
While the current numbers remain relatively low, officials warn that continued vigilance will be essential in the coming weeks as temperatures rise.
