Patna: Workers associated with the Patna Metro project staged a protest over alleged poor working conditions, claiming they are being made to work far beyond stipulated hours without appropriate compensation.
The labourers alleged that while they are officially paid for 12-hour shifts, they are often required to work between 16 and 24 hours. The claims have triggered growing resentment among the workforce, with many voicing concerns about exploitation.
During the protest, workers raised slogans and expressed frustration over what they described as continuous overwork. They said extended hours without adequate rest were affecting their health and wellbeing.
The dispute has also centred on wages, with workers claiming they are not being paid in proportion to the amount of work performed. They have demanded fixed working hours and corresponding pay, along with fair compensation for overtime.
The situation has raised questions about the management practices of the agency overseeing the metro construction. Workers alleged that repeated complaints have gone unaddressed.
Tensions briefly escalated at the project site during the protest, though the situation was later brought under control. According to officials, all protesting workers have since returned to their duties and construction work has not been disrupted.
Archana Kumari, assistant public relations officer for Patna Metro, said there had been “some issues” which the company has now resolved.
