Patna: Households and drivers in Patna have received an early New Year gift as domestic PNG (piped natural gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas) prices fell by one rupee per unit, bringing relief to thousands of consumers.
The revised rates, which came into effect on January 1, see domestic PNG drop from Rs 50.44 to Rs 49.44 per standard cubic metre, while CNG is now priced at Rs 87.90 per kilogram, down from Rs 88.90. The reduction, announced by GAIL India, comes amid rising living costs and aims to encourage the adoption of cleaner fuels.
Mohd. Gyur, deputy general manager at GAIL India, said the decision followed a review of international market trends and supply costs. “While modest, this reduction is a step towards easing household and transport expenses,” he added.
For many residents, even a small cut is welcome. Middle-class and lower-income families, in particular, said it would help manage kitchen expenses, while taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers welcomed the relief for its impact on daily fuel costs. “CNG is already more economical and environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel. This reduction makes it easier to keep fares stable,” said one driver.
Energy analysts emphasise that price stability is crucial to promoting cleaner fuel alternatives. Patna has seen steady growth in both PNG connections and CNG stations over the past years, reflecting increasing public confidence in green energy options.
Residents remain hopeful that prices will remain stable or drop further. As the city rings in 2026, the small reduction in gas costs is being hailed as a positive start to the year for both households and commuters.
