Darbhanga: A police team came under attack during an operation against liquor and substance abuse in Manigachhi police station area of Darbhanga district, with officials reporting stone-pelting and damage to a government vehicle.
The incident took place in Paswan Tola of Baghant village, where police had gone following information about people allegedly creating a disturbance while under the influence of alcohol.
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Rajesh Singh, sustained an injury to his hand during the incident. The police also reported damage to the windshield of a government vehicle.
One of the accused, identified as Ajay Paswan, was also injured after allegedly jumping from the moving police vehicle while being taken into custody.
Police Receive Information About Drunken Disturbance
According to police, officers received confidential information on Wednesday night that several people were allegedly creating a disturbance while intoxicated in Paswan Tola.
A police team led by Manigachhi SHO Ranjit Kumar Singh reached the location and detained three people who were allegedly found in an intoxicated condition.
The suspects were placed in a government vehicle for further action.
Police allege that Ajay Paswan, son of Ganesh Paswan, subsequently confronted the police team and created a disturbance. According to the police version, he allegedly helped the detained people get out of the vehicle.
The police team then returned from the location.
A case, registered as Manigachhi police station case number 267/26, was subsequently filed against Ajay Paswan, six named accused and others whose identities were not specified.
Police Return to Village to Arrest Accused
After the case was registered, police intensified efforts to arrest those named in the FIR.
Late Thursday night, a police team led by Bajitpur SHO Mukesh Kumar Nehra, Moti Kumar and Manigachhi SHO Ranjit Kumar Singh, accompanied by a Vajra vehicle, reached Paswan Tola in Baghant village.
Police said they conducted a raid and arrested Ajay Paswan.
According to the police, some of his relatives and local residents allegedly resisted the arrest and engaged in a confrontation with officers. Police eventually managed to control the situation and placed Ajay Paswan inside the government vehicle.
Stone Allegedly Thrown at Police Vehicle
Police said the situation escalated after the vehicle had travelled around two kilometres from the village.
According to officials, several people riding motorcycles followed the police vehicle. One motorcyclist allegedly moved in front of the vehicle and threw a stone at its windshield.
The impact damaged the front windshield of the government vehicle.
Police are examining the incident and working to identify the people allegedly involved in the attack.
Accused Allegedly Jumps From Moving Vehicle
Police said Ajay Paswan was seated at the rear of the vehicle with two police personnel.
During the journey, he allegedly kicked the rear windshield with his foot, breaking the glass, and then jumped out of the moving vehicle.
Police personnel immediately caught him, according to officials.
Ajay Paswan sustained injuries in the fall and was subsequently taken to the DMCH prisoner ward, where he is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, injured ASI Rajesh Singh was treated at the Manigachhi Community Health Centre.
Police Promise Action Against Those Involved
Benipur SDPO Basukinath Jha said the police vehicle had been damaged during the incident and a police personnel was injured.
He said action would be taken against those found involved in the attack and damage to the government vehicle.
Police said their campaign against illegal liquor activities and people creating disturbances while intoxicated will continue. Officials maintained that such incidents would not affect enforcement action.
The investigation into the case is underway.
