Darbhanga: The demand for establishing a bench of the Patna High Court in Darbhanga has gained momentum, with local BJP MP Gopal Ji Thakur submitting a memorandum to Bihar Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd) on Thursday.
In his representation, Thakur emphasised the need for a High Court bench in Darbhanga to serve nearly eight crore people across North Bihar, including the Tirhut and Kosi regions. He pointed out that residents currently have to travel to Patna for judicial matters, often covering distances that take four to seven hours, depending on the district. This, he said, results in both time loss and financial burden for litigants.
The MP also noted that he had earlier raised the issue with Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal during the Lok Sabha session. Highlighting Darbhanga’s readiness, Thakur said adequate land and resources are available for setting up the bench at a relatively low cost, which would also help in faster disposal of cases and strengthen law and order in the region.
Apart from the High Court bench demand, Thakur urged the Governor to grant central university status to Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University and Lalit Narayan Mithila University. He also called for bringing WIT Darbhanga under central government administration, resuming studies through distance education centres, developing Mithila’s tourist destinations under a ‘Janaki Circuit’, and introducing B.Ed courses in rural colleges.
Meanwhile, Thakur welcomed the Union government’s approval of the women’s reservation amendment draft, calling it a historic step towards women’s empowerment. He said initiatives like the Nari Vandan scheme are helping women become self-reliant and expressed confidence that the amendment would soon be passed in Parliament, ensuring reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
