Bihar: This Diwali, authorities have allowed the use of Green Crackers to address rising pollution concerns. Developed by CSIR–NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute), these eco-friendly fireworks are designed to release fewer harmful emissions and reduce particulate matter in the air.
Unlike conventional crackers, which often contain heavy metals such as lead and barium nitrate, Green Crackers use safer compounds like zeolite and iron oxide. They are engineered to limit noise to under 125 decibels and reduce smoke emissions, promising a healthier experience for celebrants.
Green Crackers come in multiple varieties: SWAS (Safe Water and Air Releaser), SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium), and STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker), each employing specific techniques to minimize air pollution. SWAS releases fine water droplets that capture airborne particles, SAFAL contains minimal aluminium to lower smoke, and STAR eliminates potassium nitrate and sulfur, reducing harmful gas emissions.
While these crackers are significantly less polluting than traditional options, experts emphasise that they do not eliminate air pollution entirely. Particulate matter, including PM10, PM2.5, and ultrafine particles, can still pose health risks, particularly for respiratory patients.
