Patna: In a bid to reduce power outage time and enhance fault detection efficiency, Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL) has decided to deploy drones for monitoring transmission lines across the state. The move comes after repeated delays in fault detection due to limitations in current systems.
Traditionally, fault detection machines are used to identify technical glitches in transmission lines. However, when these machines fail to provide accurate data, manual patrols are conducted along the lines — a process that is both time-consuming and manpower-intensive. The introduction of drone-based monitoring is expected to significantly cut down response time and improve fault-resolution capabilities.
The decision follows a major technical fault at the Mithapur Grid on June 11, which left central Patna without electricity for 19 hours. According to officials, the fault could not be resolved quickly due to lack of specific information and materials. Engineers managed to bypass the system and restore supply, but the emergency arrangement took nearly 15 hours to implement.
In response, BSPTCL has initiated a comprehensive training programme for its engineers involved in the maintenance and operation of GIS (Gas Insulated Substation) grids across Bihar, including Patna. BSPTCL Managing Director Rahul Kumar stated that a training calendar for the entire financial year is being prepared to ensure consistent upskilling of technical staff.
Local Fault Resolution Training Also Underway
Meanwhile, South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) has begun training programmes aimed at resolving local faults that frequently disrupt power supply. The initiative targets junior and assistant engineers at the division level.
In the first phase, engineers from Nalanda, Ara, Jamui, and Jagdishpur are receiving training. The second phase will cover engineers in Aurangabad, Gayaji, Rajgir, Ekangarsarai, and urban areas of Gaya.
SBPDCL Managing Director Mahendra Kumar said, “The goal is to ensure uninterrupted and high-quality power supply to consumers. Training is a key step toward strengthening our response to local technical issues.”
The combined push for technological upgrades and workforce training reflects the state power companies’ efforts to modernize operations and deliver reliable electricity services across Bihar.
