Patna: The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has intensified its crackdown on misleading and inflammatory social media posts amid rising concerns over online content that threatens communal harmony. Officials say almost two dozen individuals accused of repeatedly spreading misinformation and disruptive content have been identified, with arrests expected soon.

In an official communication, the EOU has written to Superintendents of Police (SPs) across multiple districts, instructing them to verify the identities of the suspects and initiate immediate action. The group is believed to have consistently used social media to circulate provocative and misleading information.

According to data from Police Headquarters, the Social Media Cell received 584 complaints between April 1 and November 11— a significantly higher number compared with previous years. The spike was most notable during the Bihar Assembly elections, when 225 complaints were lodged between the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct and the conclusion of polling. Many cases reportedly involved attempts to influence voters, incite political tensions or manipulate the electoral environment.

Following investigation, 77 FIRs have been registered under various legal provisions, including sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act. Authorities also confirmed that 93 objectionable posts were removed from social media platforms.

Notices have been issued to 126 social media accounts suspected of circulating posts aimed at disturbing communal peace or spreading misinformation. EOU officials stated that a majority of the cases involved content likely to hurt religious sentiments, provoke inter-community conflict, or fuel hatred. They added that investigations in these cases are now being fast-tracked.

The EOU has reiterated that strict action will be taken against those attempting to exploit online platforms to destabilise social order.
