Patna: Many people who observe fasts report discomfort in their legs, including pain, heaviness and fatigue. While fasting is often linked to health benefits, doctors suggest there are several hidden causes behind these complaints.
One of the most common is dehydration. Extended periods without drinking water can reduce fluid levels in the body, directly affecting muscles and joints. This may trigger cramps or aching in the legs.
A lack of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium can also contribute. Without these essential minerals, which are lost during fasting, people may experience stiffness, tingling and soreness.
Dietary imbalance plays a role too. Nutritionists warn that breaking a fast with only oily or heavy meals may provide instant energy but does not adequately support muscle function. Similarly, prolonged standing or walking can worsen fatigue when the body is already dehydrated.
Health experts recommend including hydrating drinks such as water, coconut water, milk or buttermilk when ending a fast. Foods rich in minerals, including bananas, dates and dry fruits, are also advised to maintain muscle strength.
Persistent pain, however, should not be ignored. Medical professionals urge those affected to seek medical advice if symptoms continue.
