Patna: As the Hindu calendar turns, the sacred month of Kartik has commenced, bringing with it a host of religious observances and festivals celebrated across India. Recognised for its spiritual significance, Kartik is associated with Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe.
According to astrologer, Kartik marks the awakening of Vishnu from Yognidra, the divine sleep, signalling the start of auspicious activities. “This year, Kartik begins on October 7, and will continue until November 5,” he said, noting the month’s importance for both religious and financial prosperity.
Central to Kartik observances is the worship of the Tulsi plant, considered the consort of Lord Vishnu. Devotees often light a ghee lamp under the Tulsi plant daily throughout the month, a practice described in the Skanda Purana as bringing well-being and fulfilling wishes. “Planting and worshipping Tulsi at home during Kartik is especially fruitful. Worshipping Shaligram without Tulsi is considered ineffective,” he explained.
Rituals also extend to home temples, where lighting lamps before sunrise is believed to bring happiness, prosperity, and dispel negativity. The act of lighting lamps, he added, holds a prominent place in Hindu scriptures.
Kartik is also the concluding month of Chaturmas, a period traditionally observed with fasting and spiritual reflection. The month is punctuated by major festivals including Karva Chauth, Diwali—the festival of lights—Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath, each celebrated with great devotion and communal enthusiasm.
For devotees, Kartik offers an opportunity to strengthen faith, engage in ritual worship, and seek blessings for personal and family well-being.
