Patna: Train services on the Jhajha–Jasidih railway section have been severely disrupted after a freight train derailed late on Saturday night near bridge number 676 at Telwa Bazar Halt, forcing widespread diversions and cancellations across the busy route.
Railway officials said dozens of express, passenger and freight services were affected, with the operation of around 34 pairs of express trains disrupted. Several long-distance trains were either held at stations or diverted via alternative routes as restoration work began.
The 22214 Patna–Shalimar Duronto Express was stranded for several hours at Jhajha station late on Saturday night before being rerouted via the Jhajha–Gaya–Kiul section. Other express services were held at Jamui and Mananpur stations and later diverted from there, adding to delays and passenger inconvenience.
According to officials, more than half of the freight train’s wagons derailed and fell into the river below the bridge, causing significant damage to the bridge’s girders. Engineers assessing the site said repairs were likely to take more than 24 hours, making it unlikely that normal train operations on the section would resume before Monday.

Railway authorities indicated that several express and passenger trains on this route could be cancelled, while many others would continue to be diverted over the next two days. Passenger train services originating from Jhajha station, however, are expected to operate as scheduled.
The disruption triggered scenes of frustration at stations along the route. Many passengers cancelled their journeys or returned reserved tickets, while others opted to travel by road to Kiul station to catch alternative trains. Inquiry counters at affected stations witnessed heavy crowds as travellers sought updates amid the uncertainty.
