Patna: Concerns over a possible increase in petrol and diesel prices have resurfaced after remarks by Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, who said future fuel pricing decisions would depend on the situation in the international crude oil market.
While the Centre has not made any official announcement regarding a fuel price hike, the minister’s comments have triggered fresh discussions among consumers about the possibility of higher fuel costs in the coming months.
Speaking to reporters in Kerala’s Thrissur district, Gopi said the government was closely monitoring developments in the global energy market. He noted that any decision regarding changes in the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG would be taken after assessing crude oil availability, supply conditions and international market trends.
Government Watching Global Crude Oil Trends
Responding to questions on whether fuel prices could rise again, the minister said it would be premature to speculate and that the government would first evaluate the movement of crude oil prices in the international market.
His remarks come amid growing uncertainty in global energy markets due to geopolitical tensions in several regions, particularly West Asia, one of the world’s largest oil-producing hubs.
Any disruption in oil production or supply routes in the region could impact global crude oil prices, leading to increased costs for oil-importing countries.
India’s Dependence on Imported Crude
India meets a significant portion of its energy requirements through crude oil imports. As a result, fluctuations in international oil prices have a direct impact on domestic fuel costs.
A sustained rise in global crude prices can increase the financial burden on oil marketing companies and may eventually influence retail prices of petrol, diesel and LPG across the country.
Industry experts have warned that prolonged volatility in crude oil markets could force policymakers and energy companies to reassess pricing strategies if import costs continue to climb.
No Immediate Relief or Hike Announced
Despite concerns, the government has not indicated any immediate plan to revise fuel prices. Officials are continuing to monitor international developments, supply chains and domestic demand before taking any decision.
Analysts say that if crude oil prices stabilise or decline and supply remains uninterrupted, the chances of a major fuel price hike could remain limited. However, any further escalation in global tensions or supply disruptions may put upward pressure on fuel prices in the future.
For now, consumers are being advised to closely track developments in the international oil market, which remains the key factor influencing fuel prices in India.
