Patna: The inaugural lecture of the ambitious Raj Bhavan–Nalanda University Lecture Series was held today at Raj Bhavan, Patna, featuring a keynote address by renowned thinker and economist Swaminathan Gurumurthy on the theme: “Atmanirbharta and MAGA in a Multipolar World.”
The series, conceptualized by Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, is designed to serve as a monthly dialogue platform, connecting scholars, policymakers, and Bihar citizens. Professor Chaturvedi emphasized that the initiative is intended to build intellectual bridges and align academic exchange with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
Gurumurthy on Duty and Self-Reliance

In his keynote address, S. Gurumurthy examined the shift from a unipolar to a multipolar global order, arguing that modern societies face a crisis of being disconnected from their cultural roots. He urged that Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) must be understood beyond mere economic independence, calling it a “civilizational consciousness.”
Drawing from India’s cultural ethos, Gurumurthy asserted that the nation’s true foundation rests on a duty-based framework rather than a rights-based one. He stressed the importance of the youth rediscovering strength in India’s timeless wisdom to navigate the changing global landscape.
Bihar Governor Reinterprets Rights
The event concluded with the presidential address by the Governor of Bihar, Arif Mohammad Khan, who reflected on India’s philosophical tradition. Governor Khan offered a unique reinterpretation of human rights through the lens of the Upanishads, which view divinity as inherent in all beings.
He further cited Vidura from the Mahabharata as an enduring symbol of righteousness and the civilizational approach to self-reliance, which is rooted in moral strength and self-awareness.

Professor Chaturvedi confirmed that the Raj Bhavan–Nalanda University Lecture Series will now be a monthly event, offering a sustained space for intellectual dialogue and public engagement in pursuit of a developed India.
