Patna: Electric vehicle (EV) demand is rising steadily in Bihar, with Patna witnessing a significant increase in consumer inquiries for electric cars and scooters. According to automobile dealers, enquiries have increased nearly fivefold in recent months, driven by rising petrol and diesel prices and a growing shift towards cleaner mobility options.
Officials in the automobile sector say the trend also reflects wider awareness of electric mobility, supported by government messaging encouraging EV adoption.
Rising Preference for Long-Range EVs
Dealers report that customers are increasingly prioritising electric vehicles with longer driving ranges. Demand is particularly strong for models offering between 400 km and 600 km on a single charge, especially among young buyers, working professionals, and women.
Market observers note that range anxiety remains a key factor influencing purchase decisions, with buyers preferring vehicles suitable for both city travel and intercity journeys.
Mahindra EV Models Attract Strong Interest
Electric cars offered by Mahindra have seen notable traction in the Bihar market, with some models reportedly offering a range of around 600 km on a full charge.
Dealers say the price range of these vehicles is between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 32 lakh. Fast-charging options allow batteries to reach full capacity in approximately 40 to 80 minutes, depending on the variant and charging infrastructure.
Growing Attention on Maruti Suzuki EV Offerings
Interest is also rising in Maruti Suzuki’s electric models. According to dealers, one variant with a 61 kW battery offers a range of about 540 km, while another 49 kW version delivers around 450 km on a single charge.
Prices for these models reportedly begin at around Rs 16 lakh to Rs 18 lakh, making them competitive in the mid-range EV segment.
Charging Costs and Usage Patterns
Dealers estimate that home charging using a wall unit costs between Rs 300 and Rs 400 for a full charge, depending on usage and electricity tariffs. Charging time typically ranges from six to seven hours.
Fast charging, while quicker at around 60 to 75 minutes, may cost between Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,400 per full charge, according to industry estimates.
Electric Scooter Sales Also Rise Sharply
The growth is not limited to cars. Electric scooter sales in Patna and surrounding areas have also seen a sharp rise, with models offering a range of 115 km to 200 km gaining popularity.
Dealers say sales patterns have shifted dramatically, with some reporting daily volumes that were previously achieved only over several weeks.
Cost Savings and Policy Push Drive Demand
Experts attribute the rise in EV adoption to lower maintenance costs, increasing fuel prices, and greater environmental awareness. Financial incentives, exchange offers, and expanding charging infrastructure have also contributed to growing consumer confidence in electric vehicles.
Industry stakeholders expect demand to remain strong if charging infrastructure continues to improve across Bihar.
