Patna: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Regional Office, Patna, in collaboration with the Bihar Museum, organised “Bhikhari Ke Rang” under the ICCR Horizon Series, bringing together artists, scholars and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the legacy of Bhojpuri playwright and folk icon Bhikhari Thakur.
The programme was attended by Prof. Dr. Virendra Narayan Yadav, Member of the Bihar Legislative Council, as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included Swadha Rizvi, Regional Director and Regional Passport Officer, ICCR Patna, Ashok Kumar, Additional Director, Bihar Museum, and representatives of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Bihar, Tanveer Akhtar and Shrikant Kishore.

Tribute to a Cultural Icon
The event honoured Bhikhari Thakur’s contribution to Indian folk theatre, literature and social thought. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Bhojpuri cultural history, Thakur is remembered for using theatre and folk performances to address social issues while preserving regional traditions.
Organisers said the programme sought to highlight his continuing relevance in contemporary cultural discourse through discussion and performance.

Discussion and Musical Performance
A key feature of the evening was an exposition titled “Bhikhari Thakur Hone Ka Matlab”, which explored the significance of Thakur’s literary and theatrical contributions and his role in shaping Bhojpuri cultural identity.
The programme concluded with “Raag-Sur”, a musical tribute presented by IPTA, Bihar. The performance showcased songs associated with Bhikhari Thakur, reflecting the social themes and folk traditions that defined his work.

The organisers said the event aimed to strengthen appreciation for India’s folk heritage while introducing newer audiences to Bhikhari Thakur’s lasting cultural legacy.
