Patna: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna is set for a major expansion over the next two years, with its student strength expected to cross 6,000 by 2028 following the completion of the third phase of construction on its 500-acre campus.
The institute currently has 4,347 students enrolled across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes.
Rs 644 crore third phase underway
Construction of the third phase began in 2026 and is scheduled for completion by 2028. The phase involves development of 126,462 square metres of built-up space at an estimated cost of Rs 644 crore.
Once completed, IIT Patna’s total built-up area will increase to 377,306 square metres, creating additional academic and infrastructure facilities.
The expansion is also expected to increase the number of faculty and staff members required by the institute.
Two earlier phases added substantial infrastructure
The institute’s first construction phase began in 2011 and was completed in 2016. It created 143,616 square metres of built-up space at a cost of Rs 388 crore.
The second phase, undertaken between 2017 and 2024, added 107,228 square metres of space at an expenditure of Rs 498 crore.
The latest phase will therefore significantly expand the institute’s physical infrastructure and capacity.
New facilities for students and startups
A hostel with more than 700 beds has been completed for students enrolled in the hybrid-mode programme. The facility was constructed using the institute’s internal resources.
IIT Patna is also developing an AI Centre at a cost of Rs 60 crore and a Research Park costing Rs 305 crore, with support from the Bihar government. An additional Rs 75 crore has been allocated for maintaining the Research Park over five years.
A separate Rs 39 crore hostel is being constructed for startups associated with the institute’s incubation centre. The facility will allow entrepreneurs working on their startup projects to stay on campus.
Institute expects stronger internal revenue
A senior official said the institute is required to repay the Rs 160 crore allocated for the third phase over 10 years, amounting to an annual repayment of Rs 16 crore.
At the same time, IIT Patna expects to generate around Rs 170 crore in revenue over the next two years through student fees from regular and hybrid programmes and other sources.
The projected revenue is expected to provide the institute with greater scope to use its own resources for future infrastructure development and other institutional needs.
